Styling Tips on How you can Wear and Style a Kimono - Plus Size Friendly
Posted on December 15 2018
You might be thinking ‘Kimono??? Do you mean those kimonos worn in japan?’. Yea, I used to immediately jump to the same assumption too but its s simple description of the traditional japanese clothing.
A kimono is referred to as a long robe with sleeves used as traditional Japanese formal evening wear. The shorter version of it is called a haori which is a traditional hip or thigh length kimono jacket worn over a garment named the kosode. Think of it as a kimono cardigan, in a nutshell its used as a cover-up for dressing up, jazzing it up or keeping warm. However, in the western world the traditional version has been updated and revised within the fashion industry to suit and be tailored to our needs and requirement.
We have all been there when we have an event or a night out with the girls or with the "Mr" and we haven’t had the time to buy a new outfit, or you simply have been looking but couldn’t find something fun, sexy but sophisticated for the bigger boned body type.
Trying to reinvent any outfit worn so many times, the thought of wearing it again would be awkward. or putting different pieces together but it’s just not working or gelling. Introducing the kimono. Kimono dusters are a personal favourite piece in my wardrobe, primarily because during a period of my life I had serious issues with showing many areas of my body. I would use any garment scarf, cardigan just to hide lumps and bumps and make me look more streamlined and "slimmer" than I actually was.
When I discovered plus size kimonos excitement overcame me, mind you I was in my teens and at the height of feeling self-conscious about my changing body. I pretty much gradually started purchasing different styles and types of kimonos and before I knew it had a collection of them.
I compiled a few styles of kimonos for plus size women to show you ways of wearing them.

Need I say how effortless this look is? This kimono is floral, lightweight and ideal for summer when you’re not really into showing your arms It wont have you feeling sticky and sweaty because it is airy fair light and breezy! It is flattering yet on trend thrown over a pair of jeans. With the right accessories you could easily change this from a casual day look to a night look.
This kimono duster is quite versatile and carries more of a glam finish to it. It is hand embellished with gold beading and crystals with a tie knot to draw it closed if necessary. This would be perfect as a kimono robe more for the boudoir, alternatively it is a great swimsuit cover-up for plus size girls. Imagine sublimely walking through your holiday beach resort in this cover-up with the sun hitting the crystals and beading giving an extra sparkle and sipping on your margarita. Easily throw this kimono over a bodycon dress will give you sexy goddess evening look vibes. This embellished kimono is my personal fav.
